Frit Testing

Glass Diversions has some of the most beautiful frit blends available. Robin Koza, owner of Glass Diversions, has allowed me to test her blends and show you the results.

ALOHA

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only

A pastel mix with hints of pink, purple, sky blue, turquoise and green. Very pretty veining when simply melted onto a white bead. A no fuss frit

APPLE RED

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Used with silver, this frit makes what looks like cheetah spots. An interesting effect.

APRICOT NEXTAR

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
A very pleasing pink blend.  Looks as good swirled as it does just melted in.  Using with silver foil causes a "dirty" look, so I'd steer clear of silver on this one.

AMAZON

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
The colors in this blend stayed true no matter how I used them. Using silver foil created tiny lines of silver between patches of color. Easy to use - no fuss.

AQUA BAY

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Similar to Amazon, but with large chunks of purple. Beautiful with Silver. Easy to use.

AUTUMN LEAVES

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Rich color when used with silver. Striking when swirled. The colors really show when left to melt in.

BLUE LAGOON

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Deep blue, purple and teal... looks like a lagoon to me! I especially love the effect

BLUE SKIES

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Very light blues, almost periwinkle when swirled. Silver foil was a bit touchy on this one, but overall a simple frit to use.

BLUEBERRIES AND CREAM

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled (lightly)
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Pretty pastel purple with blue accents. The blue shows up in the veining on the swirled example. Using silver turns this blend an olive color with an interesting mosaic look. Another easy frit.

BONFIRE

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Red lovers rejoice! We have here a beautifully blended red frit. Be careful to melt it in slowly and not overheat this one. I think the swirled test shows the best effect.

BORDEAUX

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Nice blend of pink, lavendar, greenish brown, and black. Swirling brings up the pink, and adding silver carmelizes the blend.

CELESTIAL

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Very nice mosaic look when used with silver. Equally nice swirled or just melted in. Versatile color mix, easy to use.

CHERRY BLOSSOM

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
This one reminds me a bit of Peruvian Violet, but more vibrant. Easy, no fuss. The longer you heat, the more reactions you get as the glass spreads.

CHINO

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Very khaki/olive looking.  Easy, no fuss frit.

COFFEE BEAN

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Love the brown effects with this frit. Especially rich looking with silver foil. No special handling - just roll and melt!

DAISY BLOOMS

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil

A nice soft blue permeates the color here, although there is more of a green to it than the picture shows.

 DENIM

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only

 DENIM
  1. moretti black with silver foil
  2. moretti black - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti black - melted in only
I must say that the photos did not do justice to these beads. This blend is subtle, but beautiful. I like it so much, I tried it on black as well.

EMERALD ISLE

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
This blend evokes a very oceanlike feel. The emerald color shows itself best when used over silver foil. Beautiful!

EXOTIC

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
This blend is mostly transparent, and does not look anything like this in the jar. But what a rich palette of color emerges from the flame! A different palette depending on the techniques used (see vessel). No fuss, very versatile.

The vessel was created using dark ivory, silver foil, and exotic frit. Notice the blue in this example that does not emerge when using white as a base.

FALL HARVEST

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled (worked hot)
  3. moretti white - melted in only
  4. moretti white - carefully heated & swirled (lentil press)
A lovely blend of purple, green, orange, with a hint of pink or coral. When worked hot, the colors are very deep, but careful heating allows the orange and green to pop. Beautiful.

FIESTA

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
The name says it all with this one... it's a party! The light yellow wants to really spread out when swirled. Beautiful with silver.

FRENCH TERRAGON

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
A light green mix with tiny hints of blue. Silver foil gives the bead a beautiful aged, crackled look that is very unusual. Swirling brings up the darker tones in the green. Melting in this frit gives it the look of new moss. No fuss.

GARDEN VIEW

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
An easy, no-fuss frit. Colors are deep and beautiful. The silver foil doesn't show through around the edges as much as on other glass, but does react with some of the glass in this blend creating dark gold and caramel tones.

GLAZED GINGER

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Ooh la la! This one looks like beads on fire! Deep orange, brown, black, and even pink are visible in this blend.

GRAPES GALORE

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
A must-have frit for those who love purple! Silver foil changes the look altogether. Easy to use, no fuss.

HAWAIIAN SUNSET

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
What a surprise! The blend looks as though it's going to be all purple, but changes in the flame to reds, oranges, deep browns, with a just a hint of purple. Silver foil deepens the colors. Nice!

ISLAND PINK

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
A delicate blend of pastels. Beautiful swirled or melted in. The silver foil changes everything about this blend. Not what I had in mind for a silver reaction, but interesting!

JAMAICAN SPLASH

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Beautiful any way you work with it, this frit is as easy as it is fun. Silver foil enhances the yellow tones, swirling creates nice green veining (the picture doesn't show just how pretty this bead is), and melting is creates a polka-dot pastel garden. No fuss.

JAPANESE MAPLE

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Very earthy with silver, almost leafy swirled, and the pink pops when just melted in. Easy, no special handling.

JAZZY JEWELS

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
  4. crystal clear - melted in only
The colors in this blend are so beautiful, I couldn't resist doing an extra test on clear. Since the blend is mostly transparent glass, it looks fabulous on a transparent base, especially when held to the light. Silver foil brings out the green in the blend. Gorgeous!

LEMON GRASS

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
A nice soft mix of pink, green, and peach tones.

MERMAID COVE

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Teal, sea green, pale blue, and purple work together to make this frit sing.  Picture shows more blue, but actually there is a lot of teal/green in this one.  Try it!

MESMERIZE

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
I am amazed at how different these beads look, even though they are all made from the same frit. Each technique seems to bring out a different color.

MINT MAJESTY

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil

MONET

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
This frit reminds me of Jamaican Splash in a smaller format. There is no yellow frit in this no-fuss blend, however. Using silver foil creates a yellow tint throughout the bead with a mosaic look to it. Swirling brings out the blues and greens in the blend, while melting in shows off the whole spectrum of color. The last bead reminds me of an impressionist painting of a flower garden. Perhaps that is why Robin named this one Monet.

MOODY BLUES

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Deep rich color whether melted in or used with silver. The swirled bead stretches the color and lightens the whole effect.

MYSTIC RIVER

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
What a reaction with the silver! Yellowish-orange patches peek through the green and white, and the blue seems to disappear. Over-all, an interesting reaction.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
A truly unique blend of purples, caramel, and orange. Lovely when swirled. Using silver foil brings up the orange and caramel and tones down the purple. Nice, easy, no fuss.

ORANGE BLOSSOM

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
This blend is lovely! Using silver foil creates vibrant color patches with deep borders. Swirling creates dark caramel streaks, while melting in allows the buttery yellow tones to show.

PANSY PETALS

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only

A powdery blend of purples and lilacs. So subtle, it looks almost like enamel powders.

PEACOCK

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
By far, my favorite. Silver reactions create a rich palette, dotted with cinnamon spots and lined with silver tracings. Swirling this blend brings the purple and turquoise to the fore.

PERUVIAN VIOLET

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Wow, what a reaction! This blend must have an intense reactive black in it, just look at the webbing. Silver foils dulls the colors, but intensifies the webbing effect. The extra heat required for swirling also lends to a webbing effect. Heat carefully to achieve the melted in example. A tricky frit, but the results are unique.

PRALINE

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Aptly named, this blend looks like nuts, especially when used with silver foil. The red highlights add a nice contrast.

PRISM

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Deep blue, purple, green and a touch of orange.  Very nice!  Looks fabulous with silver foil.

RAINBOW SHERBERT

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
This blend is aptly named. It looks like a summer treat. Silver foil adds deep brownish gold to the mix and deepens the pastels.

ROBIN'S EGG

  1. moretti white melted in only
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white with silver foil
Such a pretty blue! I don't think the photo can do this one justice. One would have to see a whole string of these beads to really appreciate the subtlety in colors.

ROSE BOUQUET

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled (heavily heated)
  3. moretti white - melted in only
  4. moretti white - rolled on white disc, melted out & hand shaped (carefully heated)
This blend allows for a variety of rich effects. The colors appear to strike and deepen when overheated. I worked these beads quite hot, but this frit is delicate and beautiful when handled carefully (see bead photo).

SEA BREEZE

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
There's something calming about this blend. Equally beautiful in all three examples. I might nickname this one "Garden Breeze" because it looks to me like tropical garden greens.

SERENITY GARDEN

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
Lovely jewel tones, especially beautiful when swirled. Adding silver foil deepens the colors and adds silver tracings around the bits of glass.

SHRIMP COCKTAIL

  1. moretti white with silver foil
  2. moretti white - melted in and swirled
  3. moretti white - melted in only
A beautiful palette of pink with hints of lavendar. Adding silver foil creates an entirely different effect. Silver beads gather at the edges creating a bit of sparkle.
